It was my first time to Vietnam

It was my first time to Vietnam. Emily — J. Fleet Designs founder and sister extraordinaire — has been to Vietnam many times since she started the company in 1995. For years, I have been hearing about the beautiful lacquerware, the lovely people, her favorite hotel, her regular restaurants, the oodles of shopping, the foot massage at the airport and the owners of her factories where she makes her beautiful bowls and trays.

We went to Vietnam in May to finalize the new collections we are going to introduce this summer at the New York International Gift Fair and at Maison et Objet in Paris.

Here you see Emily and Mr. Xuan talking about a new design. Emily has been working with Mr. Xuan and his factory for 15 years and they have a wonderful relationship. It is impressive to watch them design together. Mr. Xuan’s products are magnificent because he has combined his chemical engineering background with his knowledge of the ancient lacquer handicraft. He says he knows exactly when to add each lustrous coat of lacquer and when a product is perfectly done. He is both a scientist and an artist and his products are second to none. He just finished a beautiful custom collection we created for the Four Seasons George V spa in Paris.

Many of the J. Fleet Designs incorporate cracked eggshells. There are baskets of beautiful eggshells all around the factory. Then, the artisans painstakingly chip them into tiny, perfect pieces to incorporate into our designs.

Our Montage design (the black tray on the left side of the photo) includes cracked eggshell, along with mother-of-pearl and bamboo. You see Montage here with one of our new designs, the Martini Collection, that we are going to introduce this month at the New York and Paris shows. Stay tuned for many more new exciting product introductions!
